Project Inspiration

Calla lily is a kind of flower where we can see geometric form. The formation of this flower is very interesting.  It’s created with a single petal wrapped around the yellow pistils inside the flower. This flower symbolizes purity, innocence, magnificent, beauty and sensuality.  Besides that this flower used in funeral and wedding.  These lilies are available in white, ivory, cream, pink, purple, lavender, burgundy, peach, orange, yellow and deep purple.

Since I have chosen the Brooklyn Site, my impression of the site is “The Brooklyn Bridge.” The bridge is not only connecting the two destinations.  According to the “Bridges” song by John Farrell Bridge can represent many things such as dreams, hopes, smile, inspiration, imagination and etc. Moreover, bridges can be built in many different ways, some are arched, bend, suspended and straight.

“View” is the word that most explains the Brooklyn Site, since it’s located next to the river views.  However, I have created a collage which showing views from different perspective. It will be useful for my project of Opera House because stages always require good views for the performance.

The Project Site

The site I choose for my project is Brooklyn. The best thing for this location is view. The site located next to water bodies and The Brooklyn Bridge. The site on the Old Fulton street located around other historical buildings.  It feels like my project would be build on the birthplace of New York. Besides that lots of cultural programs are already happening in that area, and an opera theater is perfect for that area.
If you are interest to know more about that area, you can log on to ( www.brooklynsiteanalysis.blogspot.com) for further details.

Arch 3611

Why are you researching this building typology?

I am researching commercial and educational building type because downtown Brooklyn became a popular tourist spot, due to the Brooklyn bridge. Therefore, we need some restaurants for business. However, I want to add an entertainment spot such as a theater that will be an attraction spot, not only for tourists, but local people as well.

What is the specialty of this building type you would like to research?

I would like to research a classical opera theater where various kinds of performance will take place. Within that theater I want to build a theater where blind artists could perform as well.

What are the examples that you will be researching… list the examples, location and architects.

The lists of Opera Houses from around the world those are inspiring me.

  • La Scala 1778 – Millan, Italy – Giuseppe Piermarini
  • Palais Garnier 1875 – Paris, France – Charles Garnier
  • The Metropolitan Opera House 1966 – NYC, United States – Wallace K. Harrison
  • Sydney Opera House 1957 – Sydney, Australia – Jorn Utzon.
  • The Vienna State Opera 1869 – Vienna, Austria – August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Null.
  • Palacio de Bellas Artes  1934 – Mexico – Adamo Boari and Federico Mariscal.
  • National Centre for the Performing Arts 2007 – Beijing, China – Paul Andreu.
  • Istana Budaya 1999 – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Muhammad Kamar Ya’akub.
  • The Copenhagen Opera House 2005 – Denmark - Henning Larsen.
  • Oslo Opera House 2007- Oslo, Norway – Tarald Lundevall.
  • Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House 2009 - Dallas, USA - Foster and Partner.

What are your goals for working with this building type?

I am planning to build this theater in Brooklyn, right across the famous Brooklyn Bridge in NYC. So I want to build another iconic structure just like Sidney opera house, to bring more tourists in Brooklyn. Besides that this neighborhood has lots of schools, and colleges such as Long Island University, New York City College of Technology, Brooklyn Law College, etc. If I build an opera theater it will fit right into neighborhood because it could be use for both educational and entertaining purpose.

What are the program elements that you see included at this point in your building?

Since it’s a theater house I am visualizing different kind of auditoriums, long halls being used as galleries. Also, lots of dance studios for practices. In addition I will add a gift shop, and exquisite restaurant. Not to mention, adding parking spaces.
